Toronto and the surrounding Ontario area provide the perfect climate for mold growth. Heavy rainfall and flooding may occur throughout the year. This creates the ideal environment for mold to develop inside and around your home. Since mold thrives where water exists there may also be inside factors that contribute to it’s growth such as plumbing in the kitchen and bathroom and high moisture areas like your utility room and the garage. It is possible, however, to diminish or eliminate mold growth by taking a few key actions. Below are some Mold Prevention steps you can take to minimize the presence of mold and algae in and around your house.

Clean Up The Clutter

Pay close attention to where the piles of stuff are located in your home. If you have floor vents then covering them up blocks air flow, thus creating a stagnant atmosphere in the room. On humid days with plenty of rainfall, mold is less likely to settle if the air is flowing smoothly throughout the home. Make sure that draperies, furniture, curtains, and other items are no blocking any air vents or grills. Keep your laundry and other cloths or linens off the floor and don’t let paper items pile up.

Air Conditioner Control

During the summer when the temperatures reach their peak, it’s tempting to set the air conditioner sky high. With most AC units, if the air conditioner is producing temperatures that are too low, then they are unable to dehumidify the air. This causes high humidity in your home which is the perfect breeding ground for mold. No matter how tempted you are to play with the AC system, keep the temperatures at moderate levels.

Keep Your Home Air Tight

Inspect your home to make sure that all windows and doors are providing a proper seal from the outside air. Drafts coming into the house while the air conditioner is running causes condensation on the windows and doors. Where there is water, there is mold. Leaving the doors or windows open while the AC is running also has the same negative impact. Close all doors and windows while the unit is operating which will keep the air dry.

Energy Efficient Air Conditioner

One of the greatest mistakes you can make as a homeowner is to invest in an AC system that cannot adequately heat or cool your home. Not only does this cause your bill to skyrocket but it also makes your air conditioner work twice as hard in order to maintain a cool temperature. If your air conditioner is running all the time it will create high humidity throughout your home interior.

Eliminate Standing Water

Remember: where there’s water, there’s sure to be mold. Standing water can creep up in several places throughout you home. Common areas include condensation around your toilet, leaking plumbing underneath the sink, your washing machine and around your refrigerator. Condensation around your window frames is also an easy target for water and moisture. If the seal is broken in your double pane windows then moisture is always present. Also, check for leaks in your roof and attic area. Eliminate the cause for standing water, and you’ll eliminate the water all together.

Gutters and Drainage Systems

The purpose of a gutter is channel water away from the base of your home. This eliminates standing water and flooding and keeps water from getting inside your foundation. Inspect your gutters for leaks or water spillover that is caused from debris and water blockage. Mold Prevention starts with action.
